Nathan Wallfisch, whom everyone called Nat, didn’t really live next door to Janet Kahn’s home on Valmont Street in Uptown New Orleans. It was during World War II, and he happened to be at the house because he was on leave from the Army Air Corps — he was stationed in Monroe — and he was visiting a friend.

State agencies wasted at least $229,853 over a four-year period on nonrefundable airline tickets that were never used, according to a report released Wednesday by the office of inspector general.

Advisories on a tropical depression or a tropical storm will be initiated at 10 a.m. CDT today. This advisory will likely
include tropical storm watches and warnings for portions of the Bahamas and southern Florida.

The area of lowest pressure is centered between the islands of Acklins and Great Inagua and moving toward the west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph. A reconnaissance plane will investigate the system this afternoon.

Fort Pike and four other state historic sites will be shuttered starting Monday under a legislative directive to save money, the director of the Office of State Parks said Wednesday.

Local homeless advocates have received national recognition for their work housing people from the streets. But they have run into repeated roadblocks in building supportive-housing apartments for their clients, said Jessica Venegas, who works with Unity of Greater New Orleans and its partner, the national Common Ground Institute, which for 20 years has built and managed award-winning supportive housing that links rental apartments with medical help and other services.

Hoping to give further momentum to an idea that has picked up a growing number of adherents in recent years, a group of local civic activists and planners today will release a detailed report advocating the removal of the elevated expressway over Claiborne Avenue.

Investigators are trying to identify the man who robbed a store in the 2300 block of Clearview Parkway in Metairie on Friday morning. He forcibly removed an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and drove off in a white pickup truck, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
